Denny Behind Bars

3,069 prisoners were housed here at the Yuma Territorial Prison during its 33 year lifetime. That included 29 women.

Denny in Jail

The cells were small and open to the elements. For example, at 4 PM on September 29, 2006 the temperature in Yuma is 107 degrees. Imagine what it would be like in one of these cells during the intense heat of summer.

After the prison closed down it was used as the local high school from 1910 to 1914. And yes, they called their teams the Prisoners.

The Dark Hole

The prison's punishment cell, it was an iron cage inside a 10x10 foot cave-like room with no lighting and only a small ventilation tube.

Herons in trees

The herons roosting at dusk are hard to see in this picture but there were a lot of them. This is at the Yuma Lakes RV Park.
